 Ground Source Heating Solutions

The heat from the earth is a valuable, renewable resource that we can tap into without damage. The technology behind heat pumps, whilst not conventional, can be easily explained.

At a depth of 1metre below the surface the ground remains at a relatively constant temperature of 12˚C throughout most of the UK. This energy can be harvested from the ground either by placing horizontal ground loops in a series of 1-metre deep trenches or by placing the ground loops in vertical boreholes.

Very cold fluid is pumped through the ground loops where its temperature is increased by the surrounding warm ground. The heat pump unit extracts this energy from the fluid and uses it to warm water for heating and domestic use.

In a well-insulated property, every 1 kilowatt of electricity used to power the heat pump can provide up to 5 kilowatts of free energy. This ratio is referred to as the Coefficient of Performance or CoP, in this case the CoP would be 5. Looking at it another way, a CoP of 5 means the efficiency of the heat pump is 500%. Compare this to a boiler at 90% efficiency and the advantage is clear.

Because our manufacturer supplies all of these technologies you can be sure they will integrate seamlessly as we provide all of the fittings necessary to complete the installation.

Nu-Heat Model 1140

The advanced control system of the Model 1140 heat pump makes it the ideal choice for houses, flats, apartments and small industrial buildings. There are five versions available with an output range of between 5 and 17kW and it can be configured to take a supplementary heat source such as an oil or gas-fired boiler. The Model 1140 also has a factory fitted immersion heater as standard.

Nu-Heat Model 1330

The twin compressors and advanced control system of the Model 1330 heat pump make it

the ideal choice for larger houses and small industrial buildings. There are three versions

available with an output range of between 22 and 40kW and it can be configured to take

a supplementary heat source such as an oil or gas-fired boiler. Nine Model 1330s connected

together via a control unit can achieve an output of up to 360kW.

Nu-Heat Model 1240

Model 1240 heat pump is a complete heat pump unit making it the ideal choice for

detached and terraced houses. There are three versions available with an output range

of between 5 and 12kW. The Model 1240 is fitted with a 160-litre double-jacket domestic

hot water cylinder, insulated with polyurethane foam to minimise heat loss and also has a

factory fitted immersion heater as standard.

Which Ground Source Pump? Examples from two of the Uk's Top Manufacturers

WORCESTER Bosch System Pumps

Worcester's Greenstore ground source heat pumps are suitable for a variety of properties and are designed to be the sole source of heating and hot water in the home. System heat pumps require a separate cylinder and can also be used with solar water heating. Combi heat pumps have an intergrated cylinder.

For every single kilowatt of electricity used to power the ground source heat pumps, this system could generate four kilowatts or more in energy for your home.

Cash-back and planning permission

Worcester are offering £1,500 cash-back to consumers on Greenstore ground source heat pumps in 2010.

Greenstore ground source heat pumps are certified by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme and planning permission for them has been eased significantly - although you may still need it - click for further details
